Celebrate Loyalist Day in Canada's First Incorporated City

May 06, 2025

May 18th is Loyalist Day, marking the anniversary of the arrival of the Loyalists in what is now known as Saint John.

When the American Revolutionary War ended, American colonists who fought on the side of the British were ostracized by the new Americans and the United States. Their land and possessions were confiscated, causing many to flee to what is now Canada, as it remained under British rule. On May 18th, 1783, twenty ships carrying 3000 Loyalists, men, women, and children, arrived in the Saint John harbour at the Upper Cove. A second group landed at Lower Cove, further south of King Street. By the end of the year, 11,000 more Loyalists had arrived in the Saint John harbour.

The Loyalists established two settlements at the mouth of the Saint John River – Parr Town, named after the Governor of Nova Scotia, and Carleton, after their Commander-in-Chief in New York. Many moved and settled upriver. On May 18th in 1785, the two settlements were incorporated by Charter into the City of Saint John - making Saint John Canada's first incorporated city, and likely being the first recognition of the significance of Loyalist Day.

Small-town escapes: Get outside Canada's big cities to find charm and adventure

April 17, 2025

"Tourism in Canada has long been synonymous with postcard scenes: the mist and spray of Niagara Falls, Toronto’s CN Tower aglow at night, Lake Louise’s bright blue glacial waters in Banff National Park. These famous sights draw continuous crowds each year, all vying for the same selfie. But Canada is a vast land with stunning and diverse topographies and cultures. What lesser-known, small-town destinations are we missing out on?

Hampton, N.B.

Situated on the Kennebecasis River, a bird watcher’s paradise, Hampton is a picture-perfect village only a 30-minute drive from Saint John. Community spirit keeps the place alive, with locals often congregating in the town square pavilion for movie nights, concerts and yoga lessons. Nature lovers can rent a kayak and explore the network of waterways or hike the many trails around Spooner Island Nature Park, which is surrounded by marshy wetlands. Take a self-guided walking tour of Hampton’s historic heritage homes, which look right out of a Stephen King novel – some built as far back as the late 1800s. Hampton is also home to one of the most scenic golf courses in the province: the Hampton Golf Club, an 18-hole course overlooking a lake with gorgeous sunset views."

Atlantic provinces are renowned for their seafood, but New Brunswick is home to the only producer of local, sustainable, wild sturgeon in the world.

Caviar is the king of culinary indulgences. The pride of Canadian caviar is Acadian Sturgeon and Caviar in New Brunswick. World-renowned. Totally unique. It is a proud Canadian specialty.
