Hanukkah, "The Festival of Lights"

December 29

The menorah lighting ceremony to mark the eighth day of Hanukkah will be outside the entrance to the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum/ Shaarei Zedek Synagogue.

Following the candle lighting, join us inside for an informal program of Hanukkah songs and light refreshments.

Please come and bring your friends.

This eight-day festival celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over the Greeks in 165 B.C.E., allowing the Jews to regain their freedom to worship God. The central custom of the holiday is the lighting of the nine-branched menorah which represents the miracle of the oil in the eternal light. According to tradition, the oil burned for eight days rather than the one day expected. Other customs include playing with the dreidl and eating foods traditional to Hanukkah.
