Geocaching for GeoCash

September 28

If you’ve heard of geocaching and wanted to give it a try this is a great place to do it. Don’t have a GPS? No problem, the Irving Nature Park has a limited amount of GPS’s to loan to people for the event. Please contact the park by phone at to reserve.

There are a series of temporary geocaches hidden around the park, each with bundles of geobucks (play money) stashed in them. With the clock running, find as many as you can, grab the bucks while competing against other geocachers. Use the geobucks to bid for prizes at the auction. In addition to the geobucks, there is a "First to Find" piece in each container. For the beginners, there will be a short “Introduction to Geocaching” presentation to fill you in on the activity. Teams will register when they arrive before being given the cache coordinates and heading out on the hunt. Very Important - you must be able to manually enter coordinates into your GPS. All interested parties are asked to meet at the shelter above the Information Kiosk.

The “Introduction to Geocaching” presentation starts at 1:00 p.m. The “Geocaching for Geocash” competition will begin immediately following the presentation. Teams will have about 2 hours to hunt down all the caches and collect geobucks for the auction. The auction will follow the competition. The day will wrap up with a free BBQ! During the BBQ there will be a free draw to give away a GoPro-type HD camera, their way of saying “thanks” for attending the event. Once again there is a way to earn bonus geobucks. If you have a digital camera, camcorder or smartphone…bring it! Young and old, experienced and beginners join them for an afternoon of friendly geocaching with a twist. Do it alone or do it as a team, just do it!

Again, if you know someone who might like to attend but they don't own a GPS the Irving Nature Park has Garmin GPS's which they will loan. If you or someone you know plan on using one of the Nature Park's GPS's, please show up 1/2 hour early (12:30) so you can learn how to use it.

Meet at the shelter just above the information kiosk.

Rain date: September 29, 1pm - 5pm.

*If it looks like rain, it will be decided by 10 AM whether or not to hold the event as scheduled or move it to the rain date. If the event is moved to the rain date, a note will be posted through geocaching.com.
