The New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association (NBIAA) recently awarded Saint John the opportunity to host the Senior Volleyball Provincial Showcase for the years 2014 to 2016. Over 300 players, on 24 teams, will be vying for the Provincial Volleyball banners generating an economic impact of over $400,000 over three years.
This year’s showcase will include both girls and boys, from each of the classifications (A, AA & AAA) meeting at the UNBSJ Athletics Centre on May 16th and 17th, 2014. The Championships will consist of semi-final play on Friday with finals on Saturday.
With over hundreds of players, families and supporters descending on the city for the showcase, hotels, restaurants and shops will reap the benefits, says Ross Jefferson, Executive Director of Discover Saint John. “Sports tourism is a vital component in bringing economic wealth to community and Saint John has first-rate facilities like the UNBSJ Athletics Centre, Harbour Station, the Canada Games Stadium and the Canada Games Aquatic Centre.”
The KV Panthers Volleyball Club championed the bid and Debbie Haynes, President of the club will act as tournament chairman. “The KV Panthers are honoured to be selected to host the first ever Volleyball Championship Showcase in New Brunswick,” says Haynes. “This event will help to raise and increase the profile of volleyball in our area. The KV Club has increased its membership over the last year from 30 members to over 80 currently with more wanting to join.”
