Wolastoq means “the beautiful river” in the language of the Maliseet people who once lived on our shores. Built in 2004 by J.D. Irving, Limited, the park overlooks the Reversing Falls Rapids, and features a collection of statues of historical Saint John figures. Stroll Wolastoq’s shoreline – and you will see how these lands provided the Maliseet people with an abundance of food, materials and medicines, while acting as an important transportation route for hunting and trade. The park is currently maintained by J.D. Irving, Limited.
Land acknowledgement
The Saint John Region is situated on the traditional and unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik, Mi’Kmaq, and Peskotomuhkati Nations. This territory is covered by Peace and Friendship Treaties signed with the British Crown in the 1700s. The treaties did not surrender the territory and resources, but recognized Wolastoqiyik, Mi’Kmaq, and Peskotomuhkati title, and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.
